Internet as a Tool in Marketing Research Challenges

Internet as a Tool in Marketing Research Challenges

Internet has become a major source of information in marketing research. Online sources are used to collect data or cross validate the processed data from more than one source to check the consistency of the data. However, it posed new challenges in the areas of data collection, interpretation and validation.

Drawbacks of Internet in Marketing Research:

Based on Netcraft’s data, Boutell estimates about 29.7 billion pages on the Web by February 2007. This giant source itself is a big challenge to find the available right information.
Some significant drawbacks of Internet marketing research are

• Excess Data
As already stated, Internet contains vast amounts of data which is relevant as well as irrelevant to the user’s requirement. The problem is not the volume of information but finding the required reliable information is necessary from the enormous ocean of data is a big challenge. To overcome this challenge the researcher has to be well versed with all the tools and techniques that are necessary to filter the unnecessary information.

• Unreliable Data
Internet houses information from all kinds of sources ranging from government portals to blogs. Though the information gathered is correct, it is necessary to make sure that the source is valid. The quality of the final marketing research report depends upon the quality of the information sources that are used to collect information.

• Demands More Focus on Processing
As there is a large amount of data available, processing this data into reliable information is a major task in marketing research. To interpret, categorize, arrange and document this information requires more focus and effort from the market researcher.

• Challenge of SEO optimized websites
Internet is becoming a major tool of promotion for business. This lead to various consequences like emergence of junk websites and money making through search engines. This has posed as a challenge to the researchers to obtain relevant websites since many good sites do not appear on the top of search results because low quality sites are focusing on SEO to get them ahead.

• Demands Different Mindset
To access the right information, Internet requires a different mindset i.e. more focused and conceptualized research is necessary. Earlier, the amount of data available is very less when compared to the requirement. But now, a huge amount of information is pouring in from all directions. The Internet age market researcher requires a different mindset to process the data using various tools and techniques.

However, to overcome these challenges the Internet market researchers have the search engine and Meta search engine techniques, which filter the information and give thousands of narrow results, which leads to the target information.

SNSs and the Problem with Real Life Social Networking

Posted on May 31st, 2008 in General by carlos-post

SNSs and the Problem with Real Life Social Networking

Of all your friends on Facebook, how many have you met in real life? If you’re like most people the answer is most if not all. SNSs work to catalogue existing relationships. They are tools to archive people you’ve already met in real life, and this archiving constitutes the only direct social networking service they provide. As the populations of SNSs are composed of people users have already met, and they only function to compile them together, they are ‘past based’. You’ve already done the networking, in real life, but in the past.

Think of the last 3 friends you made – they were probably introduced to you by someone else, or for the more gregarious, approached directly by you or vice versa. Perhaps you met at a conference, cafĂ©, ball game or a party. Regardless, the connections were made in real life, in the moment.

And what precipitates the connections? More often than not it is an introduction through a friend, work colleague or family member – people you trust and whose judgements you trust. The introducer acts as a ’social commonality’ a social agent you have in common with someone else. The principle of homophily posits that people are more likely to bond with people similar to themselves, and similarities are identified in people between whom a relationship has yet to form through commonalities. This principle is more familiarly expressed through the adage “birds of a feather flock together.”

Commonalities can come in myriad forms. You may be interested in the same things as someone else, work in the same company or in a related industry. All work to identify people similar to you. You would almost unavoidably strike up a conversation and feel a strong sense of affinity with someone you find out knows 4 of the same people you do, is your age, went to the same school, worked in the same industry and like you is an avid tennis player. Any one of these would suggest you are alike in some way, the combination enforces the suggestion, and in this hypothetical, would create an irrepressible urge to communicate or bond in some way.

There is one other commonality that occurs in real life social networking that is often unconsciously overlooked – physical proximity. This ‘proximity commonality’ has significance when we, perhaps irrationally, consider all the places one could be at a certain time and place. Something, whether it be habitude, similar circumstance (or just dumb luck – a variable I think humans naturally find difficult to treat dispassionately and non-fatalistically) ‘led you together’, and, of course, created the possibility of a physical interaction, the value of which I believe will never be reproducible or communicable online to the same degree.

I decided to discuss the ‘proximity commonality’ independently for good reason. It is the one critical commonality that can’t be readily, if at all, identified using online social networking services. It’s the main reason why people only populate their SNS friend and contact lists with people they know (one glaring exception is online dating – explicable by the mutually understood purpose of everyone’s subscription). SNSs, of course, do allow you to identify commonalities you can’t readily in real life. With a few clicks you can filter lists of users by age, industry or interest commonality, something impossible to do in real life without everyone wearing it on their shirts, so to speak.

Considering the vast panoply of assumptions I’ve made in this short article true, if only for conversation’s sake, the optimal social networking tool would be a combined approach. A service or application to use in real life that would allow you to identify commonalities with the people around you, with the proximity commonality already given.

Feel free to contact me directly to discuss, for sources and / or literature on the topic at c.kahler [at] urbian.org or learn more by visiting www.urbian.org.

Get your news the way you want it

Get your news the way you want it

If there was a reason why the younger people aren’t so wild about reading the news out of spreadsheets, it would be because it’s not cool enough. It might be ridiculous to say that being cool should be a citizen’s concern when reading the news; but with Mtv, and the internet revamping broadcasting into a hipper, more ubiquitous approach it is only right to appreciate newer innovations in spreading the news.

Newsbeet is a site dedicated to everything that matters around the globe. Not only does it serve as a news and research gathering portal, it also lets its readers submit news of their own through passing URLS and social book marking. Unlike most news sites, Newsbeet tackles every channel of current events, from industry news to Hollywood gossip. It also highlights the most talked about topics on the internet and up to the minute news from around the globe. It is an extensive site, and its user friendliness caters to all, everyone who has a sense of interest will find Newsbeet a great site.

Topics aside from technology, sports, business, health entertainment and politics, top sites and blogs are also featured, allowing readers to penetrate into different cultures and interests. Readers are most likely to jump into one Newbeet feature into another, which is a great activity for someone who has a passion fro knowledge and fascination.

Other special interest sites serve news that might seem pretty new to the older crow, and the great thing about Newsbeet is that it deeply values the journalistic integrity that is lacking in most social book marking sites. Newsbeet also brings out a sense of nostalgia through great news telling and gives a dash of modernity through the global environment that can easily access the site.

Newsbeet Bringing Together A New Breed of Informants

Newsbeet Bringing Together A New Breed of Informants

No comparison is needed between ordinary news followers and internet news readers. A lot might think that aside from predicting what news anchors might wear, there isn’t much difference. You might be too preoccupied to notice the differences, but you’ll be surprised to find out that there are many.

There are a lot advantages internet news readers have compared to the usual television and spreadsheet literate. Not only reading news from the internet seem a lot more fun, but readers also don’t have to wait for useless cliffhangers that delay the delivery of news. Internet readers also get ahead in a lot of other news, and they get a chance to instantly voice out their opinions through user generated comments and forums unlike most magazine and spreadsheet readers who usually wait for a month or a week to see their concerns get published.

One good news site that’s quite making a buzz online is Newsbeet. Like any other social book marking sites, it is user generated but what sets it above is its value for journalistic integrity. The selection of topics doesn’t end with the usual, but it also stretches out to sub-topics like regional news and local buzz. From the most vital and important information to the most obscure bit of knowledge, Newsbeet is sure to deliver your news in a way that you’ll be egging for the next day’s news.

Another great feature of Newsbeet is that it also features the top blogs and viral videos on the net, ensuring its reader’s won’t fall behind. Special interest topics like entertainment news are also the site’s focus, and Newsbeet makes it certain that the readability of the articles can cater to everyone, young and old.

Newsbeet also merges topics for readers that are seeking fro livelihood and employment; from vacancies in the milling industry, to casting news and auditions in Hollywood, Newsbeet optimizes what the internet’s real purpose is about: to inform and improve every man’s livelihood. Now that’s something your nightly television news might not be able to do.

Search Engine Optimization First Steps

Posted on May 31st, 2008 in General by carlos-post

Search Engine Optimization First Steps

There is an abundance of information out there on how to market products and services on the internet. In fact, probably the biggest seller on the internet is “how to market on the internet”.

However, with so much information it’s hard to know where to start. So, I’d like to address that very subject by pointing out some very important initial strategies.

The internet is growing fast and there is a lot of opportunity. But, what you need to know first, before you dive right in, is how much market share is available for what it is you sell. For example; if your business is a spa, you should be looking into how many people per month are search for spas in your area.

The reason is because most people, about 85% of them, use a search engine to find products and services. Therefore, the search phrases that they use and how many times they use them is very important information. This will help you determine whether the market you’re going after is big enough.

How do you find out how many people are looking for your products and services? There are some free tools but they are not nearly as beneficial as Wordtracker.

Wordtracker is an online subscription tool that allows you to see exactly how many people per day are searching for any particular keyword phrase. It also makes good suggestions on which keyword phrases you should be using based on your target market.

Just guessing at what keyword phrases people are using is less than good enough. Why not find out exactly?

What it does very well, aside from showing you how many people are searching for what it is you sell, is gives you a pretty good idea what your competition is doing. You see, for each keyword phrase that applies to your business, there are likely dozens if not hundreds of companies that are using the same keyword phrase.

Therefore, when you are working with Wordtracker you need to verify each keyword phrase by doing a competition search. That will give you a KEI rating or Keyword Effectiveness Index rating. This is the relationship between how many searches there are for a particular keyword phrase and how much competition there is for that phrase.

A general rule to follow if you’re just starting to build a web presence is to choose keyword phrases that have a KEI rating of 4 or more. I usually say in my seminars, “a KEI of 4 or more is worth playing for.”

Once you choose your keyword phrases there are a couple of basic rules that you should follow when placing them on your website. The first rule is; your website can have an unlimited number of keyword phrases. In fact, the more you use the better opportunity you have of attracting your targeted audience to you.
However, if your website can have unlimited number of keyword phrases, how many keyword phrases should one single page have? That’s the million dollar question!

And, the answer is; one or two. You see, if you use more than one or two keyword phrases per page then a search engine literally gets confused. I suggest that you write a significant amount of textual content about the keyword phrase and then insert that keyword phrase a several key places in the text.

How many times should you place the keyword phrase in your page? There are varying opinions but I will say this. Make sure you don’t stuff the page full of your keyword phrases. A search engine algorithm is a very powerful and sensitive thing. When you read you copy, make sure it’s clear and concise and make perfect sense.

The rules for placing your keyword phrases on your site is part of what we call on-site optimization. Next time, we’ll talk about other part of the formula and that’s off-site optimization or link popularity.

How To Monitor And Manage Search Engine Results

Posted on May 31st, 2008 in General by carlos-post

How To Monitor And Manage Search Engine Results

Keeping track of where your website ranks on Google for important keywords and keyword phrases can be a full time job. Although many tools exist for monitoring search engine position, properly evaluating SEO performance requires a disciplined approach.

There are a variety of ways to measure search engine rankings for your website. Popular website tools like SEO Elite and Web CEO include search engine ranking tools that can track where your site ranks for identified keywords. But what if you don’t own SEO software?

To evaluate search engine rankings, you simply need a means of measuring rankings on a regular basis. Follow these simple guidelines:

Create and maintain a spreadsheet of your rankings. Having a document that you continually update can help you see weekly changes as well as trends over time. Be sure to keep it updated at least once a week so that you are always aware of how you rank for keywords and keyword phrases you are watching.

You can choose your keyword list based on the keyword phrases you’ve selected as important, those your competitors rank well for, or individual phrases identified by SEO software. If you want to get a jump start, you can identify which keyword phrases your site is ranked for in the top 20 on Google using SEOdigger.com. This tool provides a listing of which keyword phrases your site ranks within the top 20 Google search results for and can be a great tool to identify your competitor’s keyword rankings.

Record changes in search engine result placements simply by entering each keyword term in to Google or using SEO software. You can also find free tools online to report your rankings like CleverStat or GoogleRankings.com.

Continue to make changes, build links, and record your results. This step will never be completed but rather is an ongoing process. You should strive to become number one on all your SERPs and get so far ahead that none of your competitors will be able to compete. This requires constant and never ending consideration to building links and creating more and more reasons for other sites to link to you.

Consider reciprocal linking, link acquisition, as well as adding free tools to your website, valuable content, and helpful downloads. Access to these tools is ideal if you want to attract links to your website. Once you’ve added these valuable tools, make sure to let others know that they exist. Consider a free press release, email campaign or promotion.

Expand your keyword list. As you improve your overall rankings on major search engines, consider adding other keywords phrases that may be relevant to your website, products or services. Focusing on an expanded keyword list can result in more traffic and broader appeal.

Monitoring and managing your search engine rankings, especially on Google is necessary if you wish to increase the organic traffic to your website. This begins with basic monitoring and evaluation of your rankings on key search engines. Once you’ve developed your spreadsheet, update your rankings each week with free tools or SEO software.

Continue to focus on your rankings and developing inbound links through free tools and resources on your site as well as proactive link requests. Over time, as you improve your rakings for key terms and phrases, expand your list. Improving your rankings is a never ending process, but an important one. Stay the course and you’ll experience the results you’re looking for.

Exploring All Possible Options is a Surefire Path to Creativity

Posted on May 31st, 2008 in General by carlos-post

Exploring All Possible Options is a Surefire Path to Creativity

One defining characteristic about creative thinkers is that they
explore all possible options.

I want you to stop right now. Whatever you’re doing… I want you
just to pause for a second and I want you to imagine a world in
which everybody looks the same.

They not only look the same, but they are exactly the same. We
have the same features. The same eyes, the same nose, the same
hairstyle. We all have the exact same characteristics. The same
attitude, intellect, emotion, and world views. We look the same.
We think the same. We act the same.

What a tragic world this would be if that were the case. We
wouldn’t have the freedom to make choices for ourselves because
there wouldn’t be any choices.

We wouldn’t be stimulated in any way whatsoever to think
differently or try something new, and we would never have the
drive or ambition to get ahead because everyone would always be
at the exact same level.

Now I want you to imagine a different example. This example is
actually going to be very similar to what we just talked about.
What if everybody you dated looked exactly alike? Think about
that. If you’re a male, every female looks the same. If you’re a
female, ever male looks the same.

Think of how boring that would be when it comes to the prospect
of choosing your spouse or looking for a date or something like
that. How boring would that be?
The excitement that we get when we find that right person, it
would not exist because there wouldn’t be any right or any wrong
person. In short, we wouldn’t really have any options because
every single potential spouse would be exactly the same as every
other potential spouse.

Why am I telling you all this?

The reason is, thankfully, we live in a world of complete
differences. Therefore, there are tons of options, and every day we
have the chance to make hundreds of real choices, and each one
of them has a completely different outcome.

This is the joy of being human and living in a free society. As
creative thinkers, we value this very highly because we get to
explore those options.

Creative thinkers explore many options and every option leads to
something new – a new product idea, a new business idea, a new
joint venture idea, a new headline idea, a new subject line idea, a
new auto responder idea, a new mini course idea – there are so
many things that are spawned because we have the opportunity
to explore all kinds of new opportunities.

Creative thinkers, they do that all the time. They remove
themselves from the mundane and they pursue new, different
opportunities and possibilities because that’s what sparks and
spawns new ideas.

Blog resources

There would be no one of you who have a good proximity with internet and don’t know about the blogs. Well, that’s the importance of blogs that it has made a great place among those big sites on internet that claim to be the premier source of online information. When you will go to any blog, you will find out that the best thing about these is that you can check out any information and article without much ado.

The reason behind saying that is simple, as every thing on the blog is systemized and has a clear category for them which make it so easy to attain the information that you would be looking for. Another important thing about these blog resources is that you the people who come to these blogs have an option to leave some thoughts over the information and topic that they have read just recently. That comments can be of immense importance, as when people from different cultures come together, it, obviously, becomes so easy to learn something new and worthwhile. It is one of the importance aspects of these blog resources that provide online information and it is because of this feature that these blogs are surpassing the sites which are doing the same and providing news and information.

However, along with these blogs there are some websites as well that look to provide you the breaking news as early as possible. The entries on their websites and blogs are updated as soon as there is new news that is worth telling to the readers and visitors. As the blogs and websites entries are to be updated frequently, that is the reason why the need of a system and procedure that can help to achieve this, is emphatic. The way that most people do that is by using a web feed format that is known as RSS.

There are special programs and filter that control the whole thing for you. You can check out these rss contents by using software that is known as an rss aggregator. Another thing that would be extremely good to know is that what is the rss stands for? Well, the initials refer to Really Simple Syndication, RDF Site Summary and Rich Site Summary. It is the way by which these people endeavor to syndicate and categories the contents that they will be updating and changing regularly. It is a fairly simple way to that and it is as simple that you would hardly be thinking over these lines when you would be viewing the contents and news. Rss is extremely important for you as well as it let you check the information that has been updated and you won’t have to do much in this regard. That is the reason why there are more and more sites that are offering RSS feeds for their websites.

Now you would have got the idea as how advanced have the world of internet now become and all of this is just to give you more and more information and a try to make living easy for you.
